The Musical Ape III
Piece for Animals/Brain-Mythology For One Ape, Two Dogs, Three Pigs
The experimenter (I myself) and the ape are sitting at a table which is divided by a curtain, facing the camera. Opposite each actor there is a light bulb installed, which lights up according to a certain rhythm*. The reaction as of both experimenter and ape to this transmitted information is recorded by EEG or magnet field scanner respectively. Both actors are connected by diodes with a magnet field transformer as well as with a brain current amplifier and a computer. In this way I am trying to establish a set of information-prototypes which generate a prelimirmry image of a structure of experience and the basis for the first set up of musical prototypes. These prototypes are being converted into a sound structure using this scheme of frequency aod consequently fed back to the actprs. Using these continuous feedback procedures one is able to create a new reaction image etc. and thereby to establish a'-primary ape composition.
The same procedure of information units is being applied to the dogs and the pigs which group constitutes a further orchestra. For each species is provided a special monitor. The ape and the experimenter are the main protagonists of the performance, the dogs and the pigs being, so to say the accompanists.
According to the exchange of the brain current the experimenter hopes for himself and for the ape for an experience of a special perception, so to say over the senses owing to another species and thereby dedicates the composition realised by this experiment to the never the loss non intelligible structure of the living.
